Week three for the SEC contains three conference games, three games against a power five teams, and four games vs non power five teams or FCS teams. Now that we are getting more conference games into the fold, every week I will be ranking the worst to best games to watch for the upcoming weekend. As each week becomes more and more filled with SEC vs SEC matchups, these rankings will become more difficult in the coming weeks as any SEC game is a good game (for the most part). Remember these rankings are based solely on my opinion. Let’s get to the rankings!
10. Louisiana at Texas A&M
The Rajun Cajuns nearly beat Kentucky back in 2015 but a Mikel Horton touchdown saved that game. Texas A&M is not off to a great start after blowing a huge lead to UCLA and then nearly losing to Nicholls. As of now, Kevin Sumlin’s team has shown no sign after that UCLA game that they would even compete in the SEC west and while Texas A&M should win this game, it’s going to be a miserable game to watch. Thankfully this is the Noon game so not many will be watching and have to go through the pain of watching Texas A&M fall apart. I know I won’t be watching this game.
9. Mercer at 15 Auburn
Coming off of a close loss to Clemson, Auburn will be looking to rebound and pick up what should be an easy win. This will be your usual SEC route against a lesser opponent and shouldn’t produce much suspense throughout the game. This game will lead into UK’s game vs South Carolina so the only reason I’ll be watching it is so I can yell at my TV screen and tell it to go off already. If this this game ever turns into something, I’d be very shocked.
8. Samford at 13 Georgia
After a huge win at Notre Dame, it will be interesting to see if the Dawgs will have any big game rust against Samford. Freshman QB Jake Frohm has been very impressive through his first two games after Sophmore QB Jacob Eason went down. This will be another opportunity for Frohm to develop and form connections with his receivers. Once again, it should be a fairly easy game for the SEC. I put this game higher on the list because I find Georgia very fun to watch.
7. Colorado State at 1 Alabama
While Alabama should win this game easily, I put it higher up because Jalen Hurts was fun to watch torch a lesser defense last week and it should be the same. It’s also important that the Crimson Tide doesn’t totally look over the Rams because they looked very impressive handling power five opponent, Oregon State very well. I’m not comparing Oregon State to Alabama but it’s important they show them some respect and not run out on to the field thinking they have the game in the bag already. But at the end of the day, Alabama should handle the Rams easily.
6. Ole Miss at California
Ranking 4-6 was very tough because I believe they’re all very interesting. I decided to put this game at six because Ole Miss can’t make a bowl game meaning this game probably has the least meaning to it. Shea Patterson and the Rebels offense has been lights out and I’m intrested to see how they do against a power five defense. Time change I think may have a bigger impact than people think because they will be three hours behind regular time which favors Cal. This game could go down to the wire and will be very interesting the watch.
5. Purdue at Missouri
The fact that Missouri is favored by seven is baffling to me. Purdue nearly upset Louisville in week one and lead for most of the game while Missouri gave up 43 points to Missouri State and got blown out by South Carolina. I see little to no defense being played in this game which will make it an entertaining, offensive outburst of a game. Missouri is the home team so you have to give them some points in the betting line but seven is too much in my opinion. This game will be very fun to watch and should go down to the wire.
4. 18 Kansas State at Vanderbilt
If Vandy wants to be considered an SEC east threat, they have to at least compete in this game. The Commodores have a great opportunity in this game to show why there have been some bandwagon riders giving them a shot in the east. Vandy handled Middle Tennessee State and Alabama A&M very well but Kansas State is no MTSU or Alabama A&M. The Wildcats are favored in this game and while I think Vandy puts up a good fight, I believe Kansas State wins. This is another game that that I’ll have on recall while I’m watching the UK game.
3. 23 Tennessee at 24 Florida
In one of the three SEC games on this week, Florida will look to start against the Volunteers. Florida hasn’t played a game in two weeks after last week’s game was canceled due to Hurricane Irma. I would probably have this game at the top of the list if it wasn’t for the Gators having a week off and their offense looking like a dumpster fire against Michigan two weeks ago. This game should be a close one but it’ll probably be an offensive struggle for both teams. Florida needs this one to stay confident heading in to next week’s game vs Kentucky.
2. Kentucky at South Carolina
As bad as I want to put this game first, I have to give my unbiased opinion so I put this game second. Kentucky has come off two rough games against Southern Miss and Eastern Kentucky while South Carolina has been very impressive in two games against NC State and Missouri. This is the Gamecock’s first home game so I’d expect a rowdy crowd of 80,000+ right in the Cat’s ears. Benny Snell and the rushing attack should be able to get going as South Carolina’s rushing defense has not been the greatest. This game will come down to the wire and depending on how Deebo Samuel returns kicks could decide the game.
1. 12 LSU at Mississippi State
SEC Nation will be in Starkville for this showdown between the Tigers and Cowbells cough cough…Bulldogs. LSU’s defense has been very impressive as it’s only allowed 10 points in two games including not letting BYU get past the 50 yard line. On the other hand, Mississippi State’s offense has been lights out as they’ve combined for 109 points in their first two games. The matchup between LSU’s defense and Mississippi State’s offense will be one to watch for sure. I expect this game to be very close.
Six out of the ten SEC games for week three may come down to the wire. The SEC will be looking to go 3-0 against power five opponents this week. Of course the SEC game I’m most looking for is UK-South Carolina but LSU-Mississippi State has some more intriguing matchups in my opinion.
