This past weekend the University of Kentucky Hockey Club played a home and home with arch rival Louisville. The Wildcats played hard, but dropped both the the hated Cards.
Friday’s game was a hard fought 4-3 loss. The first period was played hard by both sides and ended still tied at zero. The second Kentucky got on the board with goals by Ryan Duffy (second of the year) and Beck Shultz (seventh of the year) and ended with a 2-0 UK lead. The third saw Louisville scores two straight power play goals and then a full strength goal to go up 3-2. Kentucky tied it in the first goal of the year by Jimmy Lasch. Louisville scored again with a little over 2 minutes remaining in the game and UK could not answer, dropping a heartbreaker 4-3 at home.
Saturday Louisville used the home ice and came out scoring early and often, winning the game 8-0. Kentucky played hard, but just couldn’t get anything going and we’re shut out for the first time this season. You never know how a rivalry game will go, but this score doesn’t show how well UK has played this season so far. At this point in the season it seems to be more of an outlier than the norm.
The 2-2 University of Kentucky Hockey Club heads to North Carolina for a three game run this weekend. Friday they will play at Elon University (4-5), Saturday they play The University of North Carolina (0-2), and the end the weekend with a Sunday skate at Duke (0-1).
