Kentucky held off a feisty EMU team today, thanks in big part to their defense, to win 24-20.
The offensive line for UK was just bad. Like really bad. Stephen Johnson was hit way to much, and the run game was nonexistent. The Cats only had 53 yards rushing on 37 attempts. Thankfully, players stepped up and made plays to get enough scoring to get the win.
The defense was lights out today. They held EMU to 13 yards rushing on 27 attempts, keeping up with this year’s trend of a vastly improved run defense. The secondary had 2 interceptions, but gave up a lot of yardage from this staffs love of the zone defense. But when the team was given good field position, they shut down EMU’s offense. The three touchdowns came off a trick play and two really short fields. The defense is a big improvement over past years and has carried the team this year so far.
Special teams was amazing as well. Blocked a punt, forced and recovered a fumble on a punt return, and constantly giving EMU bad starting field position.
This game looked to be the classic case of a team still hung over from last weeks tough loss. Thankfully, they still pulled out the win and moved to 4-1 on the year.
Next week the Cats get a struggling Missouri team coming to Kroger Field. The staff must get the offensive line struggles figured out if they want to continue to win this season and the schedule starts to get harder.
