Kentucky Volleyball wins SEC Championship for 1st time in 29 Years

It was a sweet victory for the Kentucky Volleyball team on Friday Night, beating Georgia 25-21. 25-21, 25-14. The Cats improve to 26-3, and 17-1 in the SEC. Because of that SEC record, Kentucky clenches the 2017 SEC Volleyball Title. Their is no SEC tournament like in other sports, so to win this means a lot. Not only did this team win it for the Seniors, they also won it for their Head Coach, Craig Skinner. He has been one game away from winning the SEC Crown in 2011 and 2016, but fell short to Tennessee both years. This is the first time that the program has won the SEC Title since 1988, and will have a major impact on this team moving forward.

Recapping the Georgia Game: There were many highlights in the win on Friday night, and we will now show you what went down in the win.

Set 1:

Kentucky fell behind early, and seemed to play catch-up until UGA hit 17 points. The Seniors (Kaz Brown, Emily Franklin, and Ashley Dusek) became vocal changed the momentum. The team became more focused and out hustled Georgia. Sophomore Leah Edmond served 5 straight during the 20s, and rattled off a few aces to keep Georgia off the board. Georgia kept UK off balance however, only allowing the Cats to hit .208 in the set. The MANY Kentucky fans in the crowd helped UK by keeping the momentum during the UGA timeouts.

Set 2:

This set was a set of runs, with UK having more and showing the depth in the roster. The serving for the Cats was good, and the offense was amazing. The Wildcats hit a stellar .412 on the evening, and balanced the attack with long and plentiful rallies by Senior Ashley Dusek and Georgia Native Gabby Curry. They made some amazing plays, and fired up the whole team. Kentucky pulled out the win because of timely hits, and limiting the self-inflicted errors.

Set 3:

After Kentucky took the lead at the 10 point mark, there was no turning back for the Cats. Through stellar blocking, fast-paced offense, and great defense, Kentucky knew that they were going to win the set. Some of the hardest hit balls of the season were hurtled towards the Bulldog defense, and proved to be too much. Kentucky doubled UGA in the end, and finished it on a UGA error. The Kentucky crowd erupted (Keep in mind this is at UGA) and the team hustled together for a time they would never forget.

Kentucky had a great night tonight, and will make their 13th straight NCAA Tournament. They will wait to see where they will be seeded, and who they will face against this Sunday, at night. They will host the first and second rounds of the tournament at Memorial Coliseum, so come out and support. If UK is one of the top 4 highest ranked teams to make it to the third round, they will also host those rounds. Wherever they go, be sure to give them your continuous love and support. Kentucky has never made it past the Elite 8, so it will be great to see hoe far they make it this year! The Cats wore the road black uniforms, with black shorts and white knee pads. Ashley Dusek wore her road white jersey, with black pants, and white knee pads. Kentucky may share the SEC Title this year, if Florida wins at Mizzou on Saturday. However, the Cats are for sure in the NCAA Tournament because they are Conference Champions.

Leah Edmond and Avery Skinner led the attack for Kentucky on offense on Friday, getting 15 and 11 kills respectively. Leah Edmond also had a double-double, adding 11 digs to her performance. Freshman Madison Lilley had 36 assists, one of the highest in the nation. Lastly, Senior Ashley Dusek had a great 20 dig performance, a solid night for the 3 time SEC Libero of the Year.
