This weekend the University of Kentucky Hockey Club got a huge two game sweep of Vandy in Nashville. These wins move Kentucky to 17-7-1-1 and 4-0 in the SECHC. But more importantly, it moves UK two more games closer to the SECHC tournament.
Friday the Cats got a 7-3 win. Proctor, Spindlow, Lehmann, and Riley all scored in the first. Schultz would add a power play goal in the second for a 5-3 UK lead at the end of the second. Schultz and Proctor would each score again in the third and give UK the 7-3 win.
Saturday the Cats smacked Vandy early with a goal from Shannon only 25 seconds in. The rest of the first was all UK, as Schultz and Shannon (for a second time in the period) would add goals. Vandy would get a power play goal late in the period, and had a break away as time was almost expired, but Max Boss made a great diving play to break up the chance and UK would head into the break with a 3-1 lead.
The second would start off slow for UK, as they picked up two quick penalties and gave Vandy a 5 on 3 power play. Kentucky would hold strong and kill off the power play. Vandy turned it on in the second and would control the pace for most the period and get a goal. A power play chance for the Cats late in the period would be huge as Day scores to give Kentucky the 4-2 lead into the second break.
Kentucky would take back the tempo of the game and get three more goals in the period, as Spindlow, Duffy (power play), and Schultz would each score. Kentucky would leave Nashville with a 7-2 win.
Kentucky has two games left this coming weekend, both as home and both against SECHC competition. Tennessee will be in on Friday for a special night at the Lexington Ice Center. It will be the first ever SECHC home game on UK history, senior night, and the presentation of the first ever Taylor Vit Leadership Award presented by ukfansallday.com. The award will be given to the winner in a special presentation with the Vit family. Saturday will see defending SECHC Champion, Georgia, come to The Barn.
Both games need to be sold out and loud! Tickets are already on sale on the teams website, ukhockey.com, so grab them while you can.
