Kentucky Softball Slugs way to 11-0 Run Rule Victory Win Over CS Fullerton

After three games in three days, or seven games in eight days, you would think that fatigue or lack of effort would become present in this Kentucky Softball team. If you thought so, you would be wrong. Kentucky only needed 4 innings of offense and five innings of defense to take care of Cal State Fullerton and win the 2018 Campbell/ Cartier Classic. Kentucky clicked on all cylinders tonight, with the offense getting all the recognition.

The bats came alive tonight, as Abbey Cheek and California native Ashley Ruiz both hit homeruns. Cheek racked in 3 RBI’s on the homerun, and many others got in on the action. Alex Martens, Lauren Johnson, and Katie Reed all got a hit or RBI to continue the momentum for Kentucky.

Freshman Grace Baalman improved her record on the season to 2-1, as she went the five inning distance, while only giving up one hit and no runs allowed. She hasn’t given up a run in the 12 innings that she pitched while she was at San Diego. Although it may have been hard to follow a No-Hitter just thirty minutes before she pitched, she used that momentum and power to continue the great pitching that was in full display on Saturday night.

The defense was amazing for Kentucky on Saturday night and the throws have become a lot more accurate since we saw them a week ago in New Mexico. Abbey Cheek and the rest of the infield were very quick and had a great softball IQ, which helped get key outs when needed.

Kentucky is 2-0 while wearing these uniforms, with the other win coming thirty moments before the beginning of this game. The new jersey is soon to be a fan favorite because of its unique design and eye catching print.

With the win, Kentucky improves to 5-2 on the season and is currently riding a 5 game win streak. The Cats will return home to Lexington this week, before traveling to Orlando, Florida next weekend to play Minnesota, Duke, Bradley, Harvard, and Purdue. These games are all quality opponents and will help see how far UK has come this season.
