Wow. Sophomore Pitcher Autumn Humes started the game vs. North Dakota State with an ERA that was over 24.5, and finished the game with a fifth of that total, her first career victory at Kentucky, and a no-hitter. Even though two NDSU batters reached first base, two double plays ended the innings to face the minimum amount of batters possible in a game.
Pitching wasn’t the only highlight of the game however, because the offense and defense didn’t come to disappoint. The Kentucky offense was highlighted by Senior Outfielder, Brooklin Hinz, who went 2-2 and scored the second run in the seventh inning to give UK an extra cushion heading into the final three outs. Add her first stolen base of the season and some crucial leadership, and you get a breakout performance that gives momentum heading into the rest of the season. Lauren Johnson and Jenny Schaper were responsible for the RBI’s in the competition, but Erin Rethlake and Katie Reed got in the action for the Cats to account for the other two hits.
When pitching and offense click, your defense has no pressure and tends to be nearly flawless. Well, this was no exception for Kentucky on Saturday evening. UK forced two double plays to keep Autumn Humes’ No-Hitter intact, something that the dugout knew could happen… but wouldn’t dare say. Truly, the defense was very crisp and focused, and didn’t have many opportunities to mess up because the ball rarely got out of possession from Autumn Humes.
After this amazing game for Kentucky, the Cats finish off the Cambell/ Cartier Classic vs. California State Fullerton immediately after the win, and will continue to improve for the rest of the season. Kentucky beat CS Fullerton on Friday night in run rule fashion, 10-2 to earn their third win of the season. Now Kentucky is sitting at a 4-2 record and hoping to repeat the same result as Friday night.
Just in case you didn’t know, Kentucky revealed their new fifth jersey of the season, which is also what they played in vs. NDSU. An all pinstripe jersey is a modern version of a Kentucky classic, and looks great on this team.
