Boy, oh Boy! It was a monumental day in the history of UK Athletics, as 4th seeded Kentucky Rifle upset WVU, TCU, and Murray state to win the 2017-2018 NCAA National Rifle Championship! The winning score for Kentucky was 4717, the highest score of the season. Kentucky came to Charleston, South Carolina with one goal in mind. To win a National Championship. That’s just what they did. On Friday, the Cats opened out of the gate with a 2345 score in smallbore, and was ahead of top-ranked WVU by 18 points. Felling confident, Freshman Henrik Larson and Hannah Carr led Kentucky by scoring 592 and 587, respectively. 3 of the top 5 individual athletes that were were from Kentucky, which helped Kentucky realize what they needed to do going into the final day of their season.
Early Saturday morning, Kentucky Freshman Henrik Larson looked over at his teammates and took a deep breath. He then took his starting stance and went nearly perfect, hitting a 10 or better on 56 of his 60 shots to help his team out. His score, a 596-the fourth best of any competitor over the weekend. Every single player on the team had the meet of their lives, and contributed to the victory. Attention should also be placed on Hailee Sigmon, who scored a career best 595, the seventh best score in the nation throughout the whole season. As seen below, these Kentucky shooters placed top 10 in various competitions. Keep in mind, they were competing against Olympians and Junior World Champions. Nothing was going to stop Kentucky from reaching their goal over the weekend.
One of the reasons why Kentucky did so good is the chip on their shoulder, being seeded lower than what they thought they would receive. Nobody in the nation thought they could win, but the Cats proved them wrong when they won the whole title. The title is the second in program history, coming after the first title in 2011. Groove Street? ✅ Banner Added? ✅ National Champions? You bet. ✅ Congrats to EVERYONE around this program for getting these athletes to the point where they are now, and celebrate 12th National Title in UK Athletics history!
