This is our version of ranking the remaining teams left in the SWEET 16. Going to try to do this without letting my UK Bias get the best of me. Wish me luck this is gonna be TOUGH!!
.) Nova- This team has earned the right to take the top spot in are rankings. They have been ranked in the Top 5 basically all season long. Nova has done nothing wrong in the first 2 rounds to make us think any different. Dominant wins over Radford and Bama has Nova safely at number 1. Next up for them, West Virginia.
.)Kentucky- The Young Cats have won 10 out of 11 including a SEC Tourney Title. Some people might think this is a little high for the CATS but i disagree. Kentucky as done nothing wrong of late and they have looked dominant winning. A tough win over a well coach Davidson team to open the NCAA Tourney and they followed it up with a beat down of Buffalo in the 2nd round 95-75. The Cats have showed they can win playing multiple styles in tempos over the last few games. Kentucky gets Kansas St next in CAT-Lanta.
Here’s the put back Kentucky fans can’t get enough of.
.) Duke- It pains me to even Type the name of that school on the list. But we all know the talent that they have. It’s been a pretty easy tourney through 2 rounds for the Devils so far. Bagley and Carter are a tough force for any body to match up with. They will matchup against ACC rival Syracuse in their Sweet 16 game.
.) Kansas- This isn’t your typical Bill Self Jayhawk team. They lack a lot of size in the post compared to Kansas teams of the past. But this Jayhawk team can really score in the half court and they are hard to guard. They are led by their guard trio of Devonte Graham, Svi Mykhailiuk and Mississippi St transfer Malik Newman. No way we could leave this team out of the top 4. They get Clemson in the Sweet 16.
.) West Virginia- Bob Huggins and his Mountaineers have been ballin out in the tourney so far led by their workhorse and lead guard Jevon Carter. West Virginia is always a tough out in this tourney and this year is no different. But they have a tough task ahead of them in a matchup with the team who is number one in are rankings Villanova. Can they turnover Nova enough to claim a spot in the Elite 8??
.) Texas Tech- We have 3 teams from the Big 12 inside are top 6. Texas Tech reminds me alot of last years South Carolina Team. They have the veteran leadership and they are a team who hangs their hats on defense and physicality which makes them a tough out in this tourney. The Red Raiders will matchup with a banged up Purdue team in the Sweet 16.
.) Clemson- Some of you might be saying why is Clemson so high on the list. Because this team is playing very good ball at the moment. I know its hard to take Clemson basketball serious but this team is serious and they have the guards who can guard and guards who can send you home if you don’t take them serious. Kansas will have their hands full with this well coached team from the ACC in the Sweet 16.
.) Michigan- John Beilein is all i need to say here. He might be the most underrated coach in all of sports, this guy is tough in this tournament format. Michigan is gonna show up well prepared and ready to play no matter where they play and who they play, that’s just the Beilein way. Michigan is a team who is hot and they are lucky to still be in this tourney, it took a miracle shot from freshman Jordan Poole against Houston to get them to this point in the tourney. They get a matchup with Texas A&M in Los Angeles.
.) Texas A&M- We have been waiting on this team all season. These Aggies are full of talent and have battled injury problems all year long, But here they are in the Sweet 16 and playing their best basketball of the season. If you take down a North Carolina team by 20 in the NCAA tourney you prolly deserve to be higher on this list, but i’m sure their fine at number 9. Their Size will be a problem for Michigan in the SWEET 16.
.) Gonzaga- I’m not as high on Gonzaga like most people. This team is good but i can’t trust their guards at the moment. They lost a lot from a team who lost in the National Championship game last year. The Zags really have not matched up against some of the great competition like the others ahead of them on the list have in the last month or two. But they do have a favorable matchup with Florida St in the Sweet 16. But only time will tell if i’m reading the Zags right or wrong.
.) Purdue- Losing Isaac Haas is killer for this Purdue team. They draw a tough matchup in the Sweet 16 with Texas Tech who can really make life tough on the Purdue guards. Will the Law Firm of Edwards and Edwards be enough to carry Purdue the rest of the way, that is the ???.
.) Loyola Chicago- The Rambler’s have the power of Prayer on their side with Sister Jean. This is a team you don’t wanna be tied up with late in the ball game, They have showed they have the players who are capable of making the winning plays late. Loyola is great in the Halfcourt on both ends of the floor and they don’t give up anything easy. They have wins over Florida, Miami and Tennessee, The Ramblers wont fear the Sweet 16 at all. Nevada awaits them in Atlanta.
Game winner vs Tennessee
.) Nevada- Down 22 against Cincy in the 2nd round. The Wolf Pack looked like they were going back to Nevada, but the gritty and undermanned Wolf Pack rallied together and pulled off the magical comeback in the Music City Nashville, Tennessee. Nevada is a team made up of a bunch of transfers. Nevada and Loyola will be a fun one to watch in the Sweet 16.
Here’s a highlight from the Nevada vs Cincy game.
.) Florida State- The Noles have been a weird and hard team to figure out this season. They have wins over Florida, North Carolina and Xavier. But this team is so Jekyll and Hyde, You never know what Noles teams is gonna show up. This team is full of talent and depth. Leonard Hamilton plays up to 10 guys and they have 3 guys over 7 foot they can put in the game. Gonna be interesting to see what Florida State teams shows up against Gonzaga in the Sweet 16.
.) Syracuse- It hasn’t been pretty at all for Syracuse to this point, but the Cuse still have some Juice left in them. Their zone has been a tough code to crack to this point which is the reason they are still playing. But a good shooting Duke team awaits them in the Sweet 16. Gonna be intriguing to see if they can score with the offense of Duke to pull of this one out.
.) Kansas State- Bruce Weber and his team have by far had the easiest road to this point so far. A opening round win over a struggling Creighton team, followed up by a win over the scrappy 16 seed UMBC. Kansas State will get back their big man Dean Wade for this one, who missed the first two games of the tourney. We’re gonna find out with this team is made of in the Sweet 16 when they run into the young buzzsaw that is Kentucky Basketball.
