Kentucky’s 1st National Championship

70 years ago today, Kentucky won their first National Championship under Adolph Rupp. The 1948 NCAA Tournament composed of only 8 teams, 3 rounds, and two regions.  The 8 teams were: Columbia, Holy Cross, Kentucky, and Michigan in the East. Baylor, Kansas State, Washington, and Wyoming in the West. We played Columbia in the Quarterfinals, knocking them off 76-53, to advance to the Semifinals against Holy Cross. We defeated them 60-52, to play Baylor in the National Title game. In that game, we won 58-42 in Madison Square Garden. 72,523 people attended the game. Alex Groza of Kentucky was the MOP ( Most Outstanding Player) with 54 points.
