University of Kentucky head coach John Calipari loves to win. Everyone knows this. So, when Duke went on its impressive streak of recruiting victories, it had to eat at Coach Cal. Well, Coach Cal did what Coach Cal does…he wins. In the last week, Coach Cal has accepted commitments from 5 star power forward EJ Montgomery and 5 star point guard Ashton Hagans. These commitments add to a class, should Hagans reclassify, that already included 5 star point guard Immanuel Quickley, 5 star shooting guard Keldon Johnson and 4 star shooting guard Tyler Herro.

Now, he has his target set on 2019 point guard Tyrese Maxey. Maxey is ranked No. 12 overall in the 2019 class by the 247 Sports Composite. He plays at South Garland High School in Texas and visited Kentucky during Big Blue Madness. Maxey is a 6’2″, 185 pound guard who already boasts offers from Kentucky, Michigan State, Baylor, Florida State, LSU, Marquette, Oklahoma, Texas and UCLA.
The interesting aspect of this recruitment is that Maxey and Coach Cal have discussed reclassifying into the 2018 class. When rumors started floating around about a high level 2019 Kentucky recruit reclassifying, it was commonly thought that it would be James Wiseman, the 6’11” center from Memphis, Tennessee. However, when Ashton Hagans committed, most assumed that it was actually him. This may not be the case. According to Kyle Tucker of SEC Country:
” “Me and Coach Cal have talked about [reclassifying] multiple times. He’s just saying it would be a great opportunity for me to be a part of this special team that he’s building for next season,” said Maxey. ”
This means that Coach Cal could add three or more 5 star talents in the late period for the 2018 class, should Hagans and Maxey reclassify. Anyone who thought that Coach K had overtaken Cal in recruiting does not know John Calipari very well.
