Kentucky Football Spring Game notes

Once again, it is the time of year for the University of Kentucky football team to put together all of the pieces that they have been building over the last several weeks of spring and perform in a actual game environment. The 2018 Spring Game was, by all accounts, a big success in most areas. There were great plays on both sides of the ball, showing the development on both sides of the ball. It was a back and forth affair, but ultimately the Blue Team beat the White Team 45-32.

In the first quarter, the defense looked good. However, the offense did not help itself, with multiple pre-snap penalties killing their momentum. One of the bright spots on offense, early and often, was A.J. Rose. Rose showed some lightning and thunder, with a nice finesse run and then a power run into the end zone. It appears that Coach Eddie Gran has a solid complement to Benny Snell.

The second half showcased the offense again, with Gunnar Hoak leading a nice drive with a nice pass to Josh Ali for a touchdown. Ali appears to be greatly improved from his freshman season, proving that the Instagram videos were more than just hype. The other quarterback competing for the starting job, Terry Wilson, had a beautiful pass, on the run, down the sideline for a first down. In the third quarter, A.J. Rose was impressive, with multiple scores in the game.

Unfortunately, things did not go well for everyone in the game. In two drives for Danny Clark, he had a 3 & out and a turnover. It appears that the race for the starting quarterback job is a two horse race. In the 4th quarter, Walker Wood led an impressive drive, with a nice touchdown pass to the corner of the end zone. Once again, the defense impressive, with Kash Daniel making several plays from the middle linebacker position.

From what was seen and based on play tonight, our Offensive MVP is AJ Rose, who had 11 carries for 134 yards and three touchdowns. Rose had several great runs, including the 27 yard touchdown run that looked like Benny Snell running the ball. The Defensive MVP was Kash Daniel, who led all defensive players with eight total tackles. Daniel looked comfortable and seemed to flow within the defense well.

The 2018 Spring Game was entertaining and shows that the 2018 season has lots to look forward to. It will be interesting to see how things progress over the summer, but UK Football fans have much to be hopeful for. Coach Mark Stoops seemed pleased with the overall performance and said “Overall, spring was a success. We’ve got to finish strong academically and hit that weight room. We can’t give them very much time off. They’ve got to get back in there, get stronger, get bigger and get ready for the next phase this summer to continue to progress.” The future seems bright for the latest edition of Stoops’ Wildcats and they will be fun to watch this fall.
