Hopkins County Cats: Herschel Scott

I find it interesting and intriguing that there are 8 former Cats who are from, or ended in up in my home county of Hopkins County and hometown of Madisonville! I went to elementary school with one of them and went to school with another’s granddaughters. I’m proud of the history in Kentucky basketball and that these 8 men played there.

First up is Herschel Scott, he played from 1912 to 1915 under Alpha Brumage . He was born in Madisonville, KY in 1892 and died in St. George, UT in 1971. He played in 28 games and had 28 total points. He also played football and served in the military.

He graduated from the University of Kentucky in 1915, and was a lifetime member of the Alumni association. He received his Master’s degree in Agronomy from Kansas State College. He worked at Wallar Franklin Seed Company from 1922 to 1964.
Mr. Scott has been a board member of the Santa Barbara County School Board since 1956. He was a member of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church and a member of the Santa Maria Rotary Club since 1923, serving as president in 1934. Mr. Scott was a lieutenant in the U.S. Army during World War I. He was a charter life member of the Santa Maria Elks Lodge No. 1538, a life member of the Guadalupe American Legion Post 371, a member of the Mizpah Chapter No. 100 OES and patron of the chapter in 1941, a member of Al Malaikah Temple in Los Angeles, the Santa Maria Shrine Club, the Royal Arch Masons, Fidelity Chapter No. 96; the Knights of the Templar, San Luis Obispo Commandery No. 27 and a member of the Clandestine Masonry in 1946.
