Official scores are starting to come in. @SarahShip16 had herself a day. The second-best round of her collegiate career currently puts her in a tie for second place at the #BettieLou.
@craaaycar had a good day on the course and is in the #BettieLou top 10. The best part? She can go even lower after giving a few shots back on the back nine. A great round to build on!
On its own course in front of family, friends and fans, the Kentucky women’s golf team was hopeful and confident it could get off to a strong start at the Bettie Lou Evans Invitational, its annual home tournament.
But did the Wildcats actually expect a round like Friday’s, what ended up as the second-best round in school history and propelled the Wildcats well in front of the field after the first round?
Behind one of the most complete team rounds in Kentucky women’s golf history, the Wildcats fired a 280 Friday to storm in front of the 12-team field. The 280 was three strokes off the 277 the Wildcats shot in the fall of 2016 in the third round of Ron Moore Women’s Intercollegiate.
With five UK players in the top 10, including sophomore Rikke Svejgård Nielsen (first), junior Sarah Shipley (second), senior Leonie Bettel (tied for fifth), Ott (tied for seventh) and senior Claire Carlin (tied for seventh; individual only), Kentucky has a commanding – although certainly not insurmountable – 11-shot lead with 36 holes to go.
Well, that was fun. Just missed out on the school record by three strokes and have an 11-shot lead. Does it get any better? You bet it can. We’re out to do even more tomorrow.
🔵 Five players are in the top 10
🔵 Rikke Svejgård Nielsen leads the field
🔵 @SarahShip16 is in second
🔵 @caseyy_ott made eagle from 73 yards out
The second round gets underway Saturday at 9 a.m. We’ll tee off beginning at 9:54 a.m. Continue to follow along at https://t.co/jG4x4dQ83a. Better yet, why don’t you come out and watch us tomorrow at the U-Club?
Eight rounds of golf this year for @fairyleo_. Seven of them have been par or better. She’s good — and she’s tied for first near the end of the second round of the #BettieLou at 6-under par overall.
Really like how @jchang1020 responded today. She had it going yesterday until some adversity on the back nine. She bounced back today and posted a solid score from start to finish.
We’ve put in the work. We’ve earned ourselves a big lead. But we’ve gotta finish strong. Eighteen holes for the #BettieLou championship tomorrow.
On moving day at the Bettie Lou Evans Invitational, the Kentucky women’s golf team stayed right where it wanted to be, atop the leaderboard, while a familiar face, senior Leonie Bettel, made her charge to the top of the individual field.
Led by Bettel’s 6-under-par 66, the Wildcats remained in first place heading into Sunday’s final round at the University Club of Kentucky. UK couldn’t quite match what it did Friday – which was no small feat considering the Wildcats almost shot a school record – but with a 286 on Saturday, a top-10 round in the Kentucky record books, UK owns a commanding 16-shot lead over Penn State (6-over par) at 10-under par as it searches for its first team championship since September 2013 at the “MO”Morial Invitational and the first Bettie Lou team championship since 2011.
The Bettie Lou conclusion will begin Sunday at 9 a.m. with a shotgun start on the Big Blue Course (par 72, 5,947 yards). Live scoring will continue to be available at GolfStat.com, but fans are encouraged to attend with free admission. The first two days have been met with a mix of sun and clouds and temperatures in the mid-80s. Similar conditions are expected Sunday with only a slight chance for rain.
What’s at stake tomorrow?
🔵 First team championship since 2013
🔵 Potential back-to-back individual championships for the first time in the @UKCoachGolda era
🔵 Individual and team school records are in reach
At 10-under par, we have our best score through 36 holes in school history. This team is really coming together but let’s make it official with a 🏆 tomorrow.
