Women’s Basketball-

Kentucky defeated South Carolina 65-57

Rhyne Howard and Taylor Murray gave  Kentucky 17 points each as  the 16th ranked Kentucky women’s basketball team defeated 13th ranked South Carolina 65-57 on the road at Colonial Life Arena. With this win Kentucky snapped a nine game losing streak to the Gamecocks, and a six game losing skid in Columbia. This was a much needed win for Kentucky.

Howard added four rebounds and three steals to her 17 points. While Murray tied her season high with eight rebounds, adding five assists and four steals to her 17 points. Kentucky got 12 points from Maci Morris, this included 10 big points in the second half.

Kentucky grabbed as many rebounds, 34 as did South Carolina. Kentucky forced 21 Gamecock turnovers, including 14 Kentucky steals, turning those into 19 points. The Gamecocks get 16 points off of Kentucky’s 16 turnovers.

1st half

 Just like they did in the first meeting this season, Kentucky got an early lead. South Carolina score the first basket, Kentucky scored seven in a row to take a five point lead. South Carolina would score four in a row to cut lead to one, but the Cats answered with four in a row of its own to lead by 5, 11-6. They would lead 13-11 after one quarter. South Carolina tied the score twice early in the quarter before the Cats would go on a 11-2 run, which included the last eight points in a row by Rhyne Howard, to lead 27-16. South Carolina would get within five, but Kentucky would score four in a row to extend their lead. South Carolina got a late three pointer to make it 30-24 going into the locker room.

2nd half

South Carolina mounted a 6-0 run to take a 33-32 lead over Kentucky. Murray answered to take the lead back, but Carolina score the next three to take a 36-34 edge. Kentucky would tie up the game at 36-36 and 38-38. But the Gamecocks would hold a 43-40 lead after three. The Gamecocks had a three point lead, 45-42, when Maci hit her first basket of the game, with a step back three, tying the game 45-45.She would convert an and-one as part of an 8-0 run giving Kentucky a 50-45 lead. South Carolina would get within three, but Howard score five in a row for Kentucky to lead 55-48. South Carolina would battle back, but Kentucky always had an answer. They built a nine point lead, 60-51. Before Carolina would score four in a row to cut the lead to five. That was as close as South Carolina would get as Kentucky would hit five out of six to preserve their 65-57 victory over South Carolina.

Kentucky returns to action on Sunday hosting LSU at Memorial Coliseum. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. ET and can be seen on SEC Network Plus.


The University of Kentucky Softball team participated in the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic they took on University of North Carolina.

North Carolina

Nothing across for the Tar Heels in the first, as Schaper catches a would-be base stealer to end the rally. Nothing across for Kentucky either. Baalman gets several 1-2-3 innings in the second, third, and fourth. Lauren Johnson puts Kentucky up 1-0 on an RBI double to left. It scores Babbs who was running for Martens.

The game between Kentucky and Bethune Cookman was cancelled and will not be made due to the rain delay.
