When Gunnar Hoak decided to leave Kentucky for inevitably Ohio State, it left a void in our roster in the form of backup quarterback. Yeah we have three guys in Nik Scalzo, Amani Gilmore, and Walker Wood competing for playing time, but, relying on quarterbacks without in game experience can be a very scary thing to do. Today Kentucky received a commitment from a grad transfer from Troy, Sawyer Smith. Smith was a three star prospect out of high school and held an offer from Mississippi State but ultimately chose to play for Neal Brown at Troy. He came in for Kaleb Barker when he went down with an injury halfway through the season. He led the Trojans to a 10-3 record on the year, 5-2 as the starter, and was very impressive in the bowl game win against Buffalo. In that game he went 31-44 with 320 yards and 4 touchdowns. I think it’s safe to say Stoops has his backup just in case. I wouldn’t be surprised if Smith sees some action throughout the season sporadically just to keep him game ready. Smith has 2 years of eligibility remaining.
