SEC Championship Week

LSU and Georgia will face off this weekend and the ramifications are huge for the conference with regards to the upcoming playoffs. Georgia is currently in the 4th and final spot and a loss would leave them sitting out. LSU should be in regardless, but the SEC having two teams in the hunt for the National Championship is good for the whole conference and what we should all be rooting for.

Kentucky played Georgia pretty well this year and to see a team we played well leaves me hopeful for the future of Kentucky football. I truly believe Kentucky has the chance to take the next step and start competing for the SEC East each year. The fan base generally expected the team to not do as well as they did last year and that’s happened but with an asterisk. When Terry Wilson went down, our season completely changed and the games that came after that injury showed exactly how devastating that one play was.

Sawyer Smith unfortunately played well in the remainder of the Eastern Michigan game and became the starter for the Florida game. He played well until he suffered a wrist injury he tried to play through in the second half of the Florida game. I say unfortunately for a reason, his success early on kept Lynn Bowden from taking over and we’ve seen how successful he can be against good teams. I think that IF Bowden was the starter for the Mississippi State and South Carolina games, we win. To think that 10 wins was possible with that scenario is unbelievable given the mindset of the fan base and their realistic expectations of the season.

Kentucky will be waiting until Sunday to find out where their season will end. The Liberty Bowl in Memphis is a strong choice, the Music City Bowl in Nashville would be really fun for BBN, and the Belk Bowl in Charlotte seems like the least probable of the three. There’s a very slim chance Kentucky goes back to the Taxslayer Bowl but Tennessee seems like the choice there. In any event, Kentucky has a chance for an eight win season and a chance to go into next year with momentum and a very talented incoming class no to mention all the incoming freshman this season that were all redshirted.

Here are bowl projections for the SEC:
LSU – Playoffs
Georgia – Playoffs/Sugar/Orange
Alabama – Sugar/Slim chance at Playoff
Florida/Auburn – Citrus/Cotton
Tennessee – Taxslayer
Texas A&M – Academy Sports & Outdoors
Mississippi State – Music City/Belk
Missouri – BOWL BAN

Not eligible:
South Carolina, Vandy, Ole Miss, and Arkansas
