The offseason for all of our NFL Wildcats and some of our guys could end up playing in a new city next year. Let’s look at who those guys are and the likelihood of those moves happening. Free agency starts on March 18th with tags being used before that on March 10th.
Current Team: Chicago Bears
Current Salary: $ 7 Mil
Trevathan has been the top linebacker for the bears since coming over from the Broncos who drafted him in the 6th round (What a value pick!!!). He started his career making $550,000 a year and earned a huge increase in free agency back in 2016 jumping to his current $7 million salary in Chicago. He only played 9 games this past year due to an elbow injury and this may be a factor for the Bears’ front office. They do have some talent at lineback with Roquan Smith, Khalil Mack, and a couple of young guys at the inside linebacker spot that could fill in. In the end I think this will come down to price. This could very well be the last big contract Trevathan can negotiate and it may be in his best interest to fill that veteran captain role on another team.
Prediction: I think he moves on (Teams that need an ILB include: Broncos, Cardinals, Chiefs, Eagles, Giants, Lions, Panthers, Raiders, Ravens, and Saints) New team: Panthers – With Luke Kuechly moving on, this would open up cap room and leave a void in the exact spot Trevathan could fill, veteran captain of the defense.
Current Team: Dallas Cowboys
Current Salary: $5 Mil
The Cowboys added Cobb through free agency last year and he played better than expected. His yards per reception were the highest of his career (15.1) and his yards per game were the highest since 2014. The Cowboys receiving group is pretty solid with Amari Cooper, Michael Gallup, and Cobb. Cooper and Tavon Austin are free agents this year and Cooper will probably receive a big payday while I can see Austin going elsewhere. The veteran wideout could bring the presence the cowboys need on offense to succeed under the next coach, whoever that may be.
Prediction: I think he stays
Current Team: Pittsburgh Steelers
Current Salary: $9.2 Mil
The Steelers knew coming into this season that it was a make or break year for Bud Dupree and I think he made it! Paired with TJ Watt, Dupree totaled 11.5 sacks which doubled last year’s total and was a career high. The fact that he did not make the Pro Bowl this year is outrageous! Matthew Judon was selected from the Ravens and Dupree had more tackles, tackles for loss, and sacks!!! Either way, the price tag for Dupree’s services should be fairly high and the franchise tag could be in play for him and that would pay him about $16 million for that one year while they work on a contract extension. Mike Tomlin did say that keeping Bud in black and yellow was a priority so this one seems like a no brainer to me.
Prediction: Bud Dupree stays in Pittsburgh
Current Team: Tennessee Titans
Current Salary: $3.5 Mil
Wesley Woodyard has stepped back in his production only starting 2 games this past year and he had his lowest stats across the board. I would love to see Woodyard get a great veteran contract but it’s likely that his salary will decrease in what may be his last contract negotiation. He recently told Tom Brady that he should play into his mid 40’s and he may want to follow his own advice to play until he can’t anymore. The question would then become, does he want to play in Tennessee again or try to find more playing time elsewhere.
Prediction: I think he stays in Tennessee
