Pitino is Back in College Basketball

Well this should be fun! Rick Pitino is coming back to college basketball by way of coaching Iona. The Iona Gaels have made the NCAA tournament the last 4 years. They probably wouldn’t have made it this year as they were 12-16 (9-11) in conference in the 10th season under Tim Cluess. Last year they were a 16 seed that ended up playing North Carolina and losing by 15.

Rick Pitino was the head coach of Panathinaikos in the Greek Basketball League after his departure from Louisville in 2017. Of course Kentucky fans who are old enough remember the 8 years (1989-1997) where Pitino went 219-50 as the head coach. He went to 5 Elite Eights, 3 Final Fours, and two National Title games, winning one. After leaving abruptly for the NBA and failing to restore them to prominence, he decided to cone back to the bluegrass. This time though he decided to go to the dark side. The Louisville Cardinals welcomed Pitino in 2001 and brought a lot of excitement back. Unfortunately for him and Cardinal fans, he did it the wrong way. The whole Katina Powell thing and then an Adidas scandal ended up vacating 123 wins during his 16 years there, including the 2013 National Championship.

Do you think he’ll have success at Iona?
