Kentucky vs. Florida 3/2/2002

#11th ranked Kentucky (19-8) hosts #8th ranked Florida (21-6) in the final regular game of the 2001-2002 season at Rupp Arena in Lexington, KY. Florida is coached by Billy Donavan and Kentucky is coached by Tubby Smith.

Florida gets on the board first for an early 2-0 lead; Kentucky gets on the board with a basket by Souleymane Camara. Bonner for Florida with another basket and Tayshaun Prince answers for a tie up at 4-4. Florida with a 3 and they have a 7-4 lead. Gators with a 7-0 run to have a 11-4 lead, but Chuck Hayes hits a 3 for the Cats, Florida with another 3 and they have a 14-7 lead. Gators up to a 22-14 lead after another 3. Florida still with the lead over Kentucky at 29-20 almost halfway through the first half. 3 pointer by Tayshaun Prince and it’s still a 31-23 Gator lead. Gerald Fitch with a 3 and the Cats cut it to just 5. Just less than five minutes and the Cats are within two, 33-31. Florida leads 41-39 at the half after a bucket by Tayshaun Prince.

Cliff Hawkins with a basket to start the second half and he ties it up at 41-41. Florida goes ahead by two, Kentucky ties it up then they take the lead with a 3 pointer by Tayshaun Prince, 46-43. Another 3 by Keith Bogans has the Cats up by 6. Florida with a 3 and the Cats with a basket makes it 52-46, Prince at the line, he misses the first but makes the second one. Cats up to a 57-55 lead, but Florida ties it up at 59-59. Florida takes the lead back and we are under 4 minutes. Florida with a 67-65 lead with almost less than a minute left, Kentucky with a 3 pointer and then two free throws to seal a victory for the Wildcat. They defeated Florida 70-67 to close out the regular season.
