I wanted to let y’all know that I was not able to find a video of any of these games, I’m sure there wasn’t such technology back then. But to cover the title games in Kentucky’s history is an honor to do so.
Back in 1948 the NCAA Tournament consisted of only 8 teams and was only 3 days, East and West Regionals were March 19th & 20th, and the National Title game was on March 23rd in Madison Square Garden.
Kentucky defeated Columbia 76-53 in the East Quarterfinals; Holy Cross defeated Michigan 63-45 to face Kentucky in the semifinals, the Cats would defeat Holy Cross 60-52 moving on to the title game.
Kansas State defeated Wyoming 58-48, while Baylor defeated Washington 64-62. Baylor would defeat Kansas State 60-52 moving onto the tile game facing Kentucky.
Kentucky would go on to defeat Baylor in the 1948 National title game 58-42 to win their first ever national championship in school and program history. Alex Groza scored 54 points and was the Most Outstanding Player.
