1 seed Kentucky faced an in-state school to continue their 2012 NCAA Tournament journey; they took on 16th seed Western Kentucky on March 15, 2012 in the South 2nd Round in Louisville, KY.
Kentucky on the board first, due to goaltending, Marquis Teague at the line for two, only making one out of two, they add a 3 pointer to have an early 6-0 lead over the Hilltoppers. Cats extend that to a 10-0 lead now, Hilltoppers finally on the board almost 4 minutes into the half, they also get a goal tend but they still trail, 10-4, but they get a 3 pointer to get within 3 of the Cats, 10-7. Toppers at the line and they make both, 10-9. WKU with a 3 pointer to take their first lead, Cats at the line for two, they make both to tie it up at 12-12. Kentucky takes the lead back after a slam dunk and a basket, 16-12. AD adds two more after getting both of his free throws, 18-12. Tops finally get a basket after the Cats went on a 6-0 run. Halfway through the half, Kentucky still leads but the Tops are staying close, 20-17. Cats with a basket, then a free throw, Tops with a basket, UK answers with a basket, then they get a free throw and then two more free throws to lead 28-19. Kentucky goes on a 14-2 run before the Tops finally get another basket, 32-21. Kentucky still with the lead under 3 minutes, 38-26, after the Tops make one of two free throws. Kentucky with a 3 pointer from Doron Lamb and Kentucky goes into halftime with a 45-26 lead over WKU.
Kentucky starts the second half making one out of two free throws, 46-26. Basket by Terrence Jones and a basket by Doron Lamb, Cats now up 50-26. Kentucky with 28 points in the paint, basket by Anthony Davis, and two more, but he gets a technical for hanging on the rim, WKU with 2 free throws, they get them both, 57-32. Kentucky maintaining their lead over Western KY, 67-39. Midway through the half Kentucky leads 67-42, Kentucky with a 3 pointer from Doron Lamb and a basket from Terrence Jones, Cats up by 30, 72-42. Kentucky now up to 42 points in the paint, WKU with only 18. Monster dunk by Ad and he makes both of his free throws, 76-45. A basket for the Cats and a 3 pointer for the Tops and then another basket, 80-50. Toppers with 9 unanswered points including a 3 pointer, Kentucky at the line, getting only one out of two, 81-59. WKU still going to work with just a minute left, 81-66. Kentucky defeats Western Kentucky 81-66.
