Kentucky defeated UCLA in OT

The Lady Cats looked to improve 6-0 as they took on UCLA in Game 2 of the 2018 Paradise Jam.

Maci Morris opened up the game with a 3, to put the first points on the board. Kentucky struggled to rebound the ball early as UCLA had five second-chance points and outrebounded the Cats 10-4. Maci Morris scored 2 points to tie up the game midway through the quarter. Kentucky then called a timeout after UCLA went on a six-point run. The Cats had to get back in a rhythm and execute. Only two Wildcats recorded points at the end of the first quarter. Maci Morris leads the way with 10 points, including two 3’s, and Rhyne Howard had four points.

UCLA 15, Kentucky 14 End 1st Quarter

Taylor Murray drained a 3 to give the Cats an early lead in the second quarter. Howard and Morris drained back to back treys to extend the lead. The three ball was dropping early as Kentucky was 5 of 8 from long distance. Kentucky stretched its lead to 10 points, with four more Wildcats on the board. Kentucky improved its scoring by more than 20% from the 1st quarter and took control. Maci Morris led the Cats with 14 points in the first half.

Kentucky 41, UCLA 31 Halftime

Kentucky’s starting 5 was in foul trouble in the third quarter; Howard, Morris, Murray each with three, McKinney with 2. They really had some trouble executing only had six points in the 3rd quarter, while allowing 14. UCLA significantly cut into the lead due to the Cats’ struggles.

UK 47, UCLA 45 End 3rd quarter

It was a 4th quarter battle but Howard was up for the fight firing a 3 to tie Murray and Morris for scoring the lead with 14 points each. Jaida Roper drained a 3 right at the shot-clock buzzer, but UCLA answered with a quick layup. The lead went back and forth for most of the quarter. Cats took the lead with a KeKe McKinney steal and layup. A foul by Morris sent UCLA to the line with 23 seconds on the clock. The Bruins made one free throw and missed the other but grabbed their own rebound and scored a quick 2. Down by two, Kentucky missed a layup. The Bruins got the ball and called a timeout. Kentucky got the callback, Howard scored a last-second layup on her own rebound to tie the game. We go into overtime.

UCLA 66, Kentucky 66 End of regulation

In overtime, Morris scored 2 out of the gate and Kentucky took a two-point lead. The Bruins didn’t answer, and Kentucky took the ball down the court again. Paschal forced a foul and went to the line. Both went in and the Cats went up by four. She does it again and forced a foul. Both went but UCLA gets a layup but missed a foul shot. Howard missed from the long range. Bruins got the rebound. Tied but UK had the ball. Morris went for the line for 2, 27 seconds on the clock. Morris got her first but missed her 2nd, rebounded by Howard. Howard draws the foul, made first but missed the second, UCLA gets the rebound. The Bruins went to the line and got both. Tied up the game again. Howard went to the line, missed the first, but got her second. Time expires.
